In 2015, the United Nations adopted the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) under the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. The goals are an urgent call for all countries to end poverty and improve health and education, reduce inequality, as well as to spur economic growth. At the same time, climate change issues need to be addressed in order to preserve the environment (including oceans and forests).

SDG11 on ‘Sustainable Cities and Communities’ is to address the issues of urbanisation, as it is expected that by 2050, more than half of the world’s population will be living in the cities. Malaysia supports this SDG by taking initiatives to accelerate the nation’s readiness to address the two grand challenges or urbanisation and climate change. These are outlined in the Strategic Thrusts of the 11th Malaysia Plan (or RMK11) 2016-2020. Amongst the areas being addressed are green growth, innovation and industrial development in green technology, as well as city infostructure.

SUSTAINABLE CITIES AS AN INTEGRATED APPROACH

The Sustainable City Development in Malaysia project is an integrated approach to urban planning and management in both Strategic Contents and Federal-State Level linkages that is guided by evidence-based, multi-dimensional, and broadly inclusive planning process that balance economic, social and environmental resource consideration. It is also to build awareness and institutional capacity, and promote investment in climate risks mitigation technologies through a demonstration project.

It was launched in Melaka on the 2nd of May 2017 where Melaka was chosen as the first city amongst the other cities for the launching of the programme.

For sustainable development to be achieved, it is crucial to harmonise three core elements: economic growth, social inclusion and environmental protection. These elements are interconnected and all are crucial for the well-being of individuals and societies.
